Leaving Home – for college, for military service, or for a job. It’s a milestone in the life of almost every child. And a bittersweet crossroads for almost every parent. What you say to your child at this critical moment, and how you say it, can be a welcome catharsis for you, as a parent, and a lifelong gift to your child.

David M. Perkins, like millions of parents every year, recently made this transition as his only son left home to begin the next chapter of his life in college. The letter that he wrote to his son on this occasion became the healing experience that helped David get through this exhilarating, joyous, and sometimes melancholy time. It later became the book Dear Austin ~ A Letter To My Son.

If you’re a parent confronting the inevitable concerns that come with a child’s departure from home, this book can help you come to terms with and embrace the hope and excitement of this new chapter in your life, and your child’s life. If you’re a young man or young woman preparing to leave home, the advice in this book is timeless and universal. Dear Austin has received a NAPPA Honors Award from National Parenting Publications Awards for excellence in the Parenting Resources category.

David M. Perkins has spent the past thirty years in the motion picture and television industry in Los Angeles. He is a writer, and became a member of the Writers Guild of America, West in 1988. But mostly, he’s a father and a husband. He currently lives, with his wife and son, in Southern California where he owns and operates a Web Design and Social Media Marketing company.

He is a frequent speaker at parent, teacher, and student groups at high schools, churches, community centers and other venues. His message explores the potential minefield that often materializes in the months and weeks leading up to a child leaving home, and how parents and young adult children can successfully navigate this crossroads with minimum emotional upheaval.
