02-18-21 Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #431 is an hour of visionary acoustic improv music recorded live by the Gaea Star Band with Mariam Massaro on vocals, Native flute, acoustic guitar and ukuleles, Robin Rooney on djembe, percussion and vocals, Bob Sherwood on piano and Craig Harris on congas and Native drums. Recorded at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington, Massachusetts in February of 2021, today’s show begins with the positive, propulsive “A New Beginning”, an energizing piece with an inspiring lyric from Mariam. “Higher And Beyond” follows and is a spacious, driving trancelike number driven by Mariam’s acoustic guitar and fine vocals from Mariam and Robin. “Freedom” is one of Mariam’s classics, here given a driving, intense treatment and “”Freedom Part Two” extrapolates Mariam’s melody into a lovely, jazzy minor coda with an impassioned message from Mariam and powerful interjections of Native flute. “Surrender Me” is an uptempo folk song with a beautiful, naïve spirit and fine vocal and instrumental work from the combo and “Ruby Golden Slippers” is an epic tale from Mariam supported by an ambitious, wide-ranging musical backing. Today’s show concludes with the hypnotic native prayer “Mandia Viyahey” a beautiful, solemn tale featuring minimalist piano and powerful Native drum backing from Craig.
