This year, Keep America Beautiful forged a partnership with Earth Day Network (EDN), the global coordinator of Earth Day, in support of Earth Day’s 50th anniversary and Network’s Great Global Cleanup™ campaign in the United States. All litter cleanups have been suspended, however, and we are all staying home, because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the potential harm of touching contaminated litter. Now Earth Day is going digital, so we are asking people to collect photographs of litter and combine them with story writing to help raise awareness about the ongoing litter problem.
In celebration of Earth Day 2020, the Story Walking Radio Hour is partnering with Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful and the Dreamvisions 7 Radio Nework to sponsor a story writing contest. The top entries are invited to share their stories on the Kids 4 Love Project Radio Show and will earn an “Earth Day 2020 Certificate of Recognition for Community Service.”
Entries are due by Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22 at 5pm.
CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING PROMPTS:
1) Read the story EcoDetectives on the Trail. Study the clues given in the story. Then write your own original story about the perpetrators on the Bleachery Trail. A perpetrator is a person who carries out a harmful or illegal act. Conclude with an important environmental message.
2) Go on a walk around your neighborhood, a nearby nature trail or bike path (states parks and beaches have been closed temporarily) in search of litter. Take photographs of what you find, and use these photos to inspire an original story. Conclude with an important environmental message. Here are some examples to inspire your work: EcoPirates on the Lookout for Litter, EcoDetectives on the River, EcoDetective at the Harborside,
3) Read the RI Natural Awakenings article Students Celebrating Earth Week. This article was written before COVID-19 safety measures and social distancing mandates were put into effect.
