Dreamvisions 7 Radio Network’s PEACE Campaign 2026 Essay #11
“What Does Peace Look Like to YOU?” by Emmett Miller M.D. in California
I have sat with people in their deepest pain — soldiers, survivors, the grieving, the broken. And again and again, I have watched something extraordinary happen when the fear finally quieted. I have watched people remember themselves. That is what I call peace.
Peace, to me, is not merely the absence of war. It is the presence of coherence — within individuals, within relationships, and within the living systems that connect us all.
Peace is the state that emerges when human beings are no longer driven primarily by fear, hatred, propaganda, and chronic stress, but have regained access to the wiser, more compassionate dimensions of their minds. It is the moment when the frightened “monkey mind” quiets down enough for us to remember who we truly are.
I have spent much of my life studying stress, healing, and human consciousness. What I have learned is that violence usually begins long before weapons appear or voices are raised. It begins in frightened nervous systems, in wounded children who become wounded adults, in people cut off from empathy, meaning, and connection. These are not monsters. These are human beings who never learned that safety was possible — whose nervous systems never got the message that the war was over. A chronically stressed and fearful mind narrows. A peaceful mind expands.
Peace is not passive. It is an active state of awareness.
It is the ability to pause before reacting.
To listen before condemning.
To recognize ourselves in one another.
Peace looks like a mother holding her newborn child — that primal stillness where nothing in the universe needs to be different. It looks like strangers helping one another after a disaster, remembered suddenly into their shared humanity. It looks like a person transforming anger into curiosity and understanding instead of aggression. It looks like nations discovering that cooperation is more intelligent and more rewarding than domination.
Most importantly, peace begins within. A peaceful world cannot be built by chronically frightened people, because fear naturally polarizes and divides.
We have long mistaken love for weakness, when in fact it is the most sophisticated survival strategy our species has ever developed. When enough human beings rediscover inner balance, compassion, and Love — not sentimentality, but Love as an organizing intelligence within life itself — we may finally create a civilization guided less by fear and more by wisdom.
And if even one person reads these words and feels — for just a moment — that peace is possible within themselves, then I will know that this life has been well spent. Not because peace is a destination we arrive at, but because each moment of genuine calm, each act of real compassion, each time a human being chooses curiosity over contempt — that is peace. That is already the world we are trying to build.
