11-04-19 Achieving the Vision of a Tobacco-Free Environment with guest Bob Houghtaling, Director of the Eastern States Youth to Youth Conference
In this episode we explore the topic of tobacco use and its effect on our environment, our health, our society and our young people. We will begin with a story walk by the Harborside, collecting clues that prompt further investigation. The current youth e-cigarette epidemic is a public health emergency that demands solutions beyond legislative action. Coming up with real solutions requires an awareness, understanding and appreciation of the social and emotional climate with which many young people are struggling today.
Special guest, Bob Houghtaling, is the Director of the East Greenwich Drug Program and the Director of the Eastern States Youth to Youth Conference, held every summer in Rhode Island. Holding a master’s of education in counseling from Providence College, Bob has been helping people overcome substance abuse for over 36 years. More than just a drug counselor, Bob is a philosopher, an educator and a community connector. He teaches Character Education in the town’s four elementary schools. He spends a lot of time at the middle school and high school – counseling students, sponsoring after-school clubs and helping with pre- and postprom events. He reports to the Town Council twice a year on roughly 50 initiatives he is using to help kids navigate their personal life challenges, discover their passions, develop supportive relationships and make healthy decisions. Regarding tobacco addiction and youth culture, Bob has a lot of experience and wisdom to share.
